A New Era at INTERMEPA!
INTERMEPA, the umbrella organization of the Marine Environment Protection Associations (MEPAs) – international marine and environmental protection organizations – elected its new leadership at the latest Executive Committee meeting. Semiramis Paliou, Chairperson of HELMEPA, was unanimously re-elected as Chairperson for a two-year term, while Şadan Kaptanoğlu, Chairperson of the Board of TURMEPA, was appointed as Vice Chairperson. George Tsavliris, who served as the President of CYMEPA, will continue to serve as an advisor in the role of Past President.
Preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary in June 2026, INTERMEPA brings together national MEPA organizations from Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, North America, Nigeria, the Philippines, Ukraine, and Uruguay, working jointly to protect the seas.
INTERMEPA Chairperson Semiramis Paliou said:
“Our strength lies in unity. Each national MEPA brings its own initiatives and volunteers. Together, we represent more than one million volunteers worldwide and create tangible impacts through hundreds of actions, educational programs, and awareness initiatives.”
Şadan Kaptanoğlu, Chairperson of TURMEPA and former Vice Chairperson of INTERMEPA from 2016 to 2021, added:
“When it comes to the seas, collaboration is not an option – it is a necessity. Under the INTERMEPA umbrella, we not only share knowledge but also hope. With the responsibility and excitement of taking on the role of Vice Chairperson, I will continue to represent our country and our association at the international level in the best possible way.”
