Göcek is a special environmental protection area and the Integrated Coastal Zone Management action plan has been put into effect as of August 1, 2009 by the Special Environmental Protection Agency. Blue and green chip cards will play an important part in the application of the plan that is implemented for the first time in Turkey.

Göcek Coastal Zone Management plan will be carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Special Environmental Protection Agency in Fethiye-Göcek Special Environmental Protection Area with the collaboration of Governorship of Muğla and TURMEPA. As part of this action plan, entry to certain bays will be restricted. The boats that don’t have a bilge tank or that don’t pump out the bilge with the legally allowed methods will be fined. The blue and green chip cards implemented to carry out effective control will allow the boats’ bilge to be checked.

When the boats visiting Muğla coasts dispose of their waste at the waste collection facility or the pump-out boat, their information will be recorded in their cards which will be checked during controls. Not disposing of the waste according to these rules will be punishable by a fine and the repetition of this offense will result in the lock up of the boat. As part of a 2-year agreement, TURMEPA will be assuming an important role with the pump-out boat and waste collection facilities. The association will also carry out supportive activities for the use of the blue and green cards.

During the first phase, the blue cards will be distributed to the boats in the Göcek area; overall 9574 boats along the 1,124 km long coast line will be given these cards. As a result of this operation, boats will regularly deliver their waste to 30 Waste Collection Points. Coast Guard will carry out the controls and the boats that cannot submit their proper waste disposal by the card will be fined.
